Why hard courts are usually your best bet after a shower, which venues to head to, and the one synthetic grass club that dries in minutes.
Most people assume synthetic grass is the safer bet after rain. In my experience it's the other way round. With a bit of heat and one hour of no rain, a hard court dries out entirely, as long as the rain isn't continuous.
Synthetic grass holds water in the sand and fibres, so it keeps a slippery surface for several hours. That's when ankles roll and people fall changing direction. If a synthetic court still looks dark or feels slick underfoot, don't play on it.
| Venue | Hard courts | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney Boys High School (Surry Hills) | 4 Plexicushion hard | My first choice after rain. Open until 11pm weekdays. |
| Eastside Tennis Centre (Kingsford) | Hard, plus clay and synthetic | Book a hard court specifically. |
| Snape Park (Maroubra) | 1 hard (5 synthetic) | Only one hard court, so book early on wet days. |
| Prince Alfred Park (Surry Hills) | 5 Plexicushion hard | Next to Central station. |
| Heffron Park (Matraville) | 4 hard (6 synthetic) | Big free car park. |
| Mutch Park (Pagewood) | 2 hard (4 synthetic) | Flat-rate hire, easy parking. |
Latham Park in South Coogee uses a Super Sopper, a roller that soaks water off the synthetic grass. Play can usually resume about 10 minutes after the rain stops, and it also has 2 hard courts.
Don't cancel just because it rained earlier. Call the club on 9344 3350 to check the courts are playable.
Hard courts usually dry faster. With some heat and about an hour without rain, a hard court dries out completely, while synthetic grass can stay slippery for several hours. Latham Park is an exception because it clears its synthetic grass with a Super Sopper.
Head for hard courts: Sydney Boys High School in Surry Hills, Eastside Tennis Centre in Kingsford and Snape Park in Maroubra. Prince Alfred Park, Heffron Park and Mutch Park also have hard courts.
Not until it has dried. Wet synthetic grass stays slippery for hours and is a common cause of rolled ankles and falls when changing direction.
